AUSTRIA: The accident frequency rate has once again reached a new low

Home > The news of EUROGIP and occupational risks in Europe > AUSTRIA: The accident frequency rate has once again reached a new low

In 2017, the AUVA recorded 159,866 accidents, including 104,161 at work and 54,510 accidents at school, and recognized 1,195 diseases of occupational origin. The AUVA insured 5,021,593 people (+1.7%) and 320,983 employers (+0.3%). The accident frequency rate per 1000 workers decreased to 24.27, its lowest level ever.

Although the working population increased, the number of days of sick leave following accidents at work (except commuting accidents) decreased last year (-10,254 days). Although the construction sector had around 4,400 more workers than in 2016, the number of accidents at work (except commuting accidents) fell slightly. And yet, this sector is still the most risky compared with other sectors.

As regards the causes, in 34,000 cases the accident was caused by the loss of control of a machine, a tool, a vehicle or an animal. Then come falls, with 18,292 cases, followed by external injuries which represented 17,161 cases and which were caused by uncoordinated movements, shocks or sharp objects.

The number of occupational diseases (1195 cases) increased only slightly compared with 2016 (1182 cases), due to growth in employment. The most prevalent conditions were noise-related deafness (642 cases), skin diseases (148 cases), asbestos-related diseases of the lung, the larynx and the pleura (104 cases), and respiratory diseases (84 cases).
