{"id":22933,"date":"2014-07-29T16:51:47","date_gmt":"2014-07-29T14:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/united-kingdom-decrease-in-fatal-occupational-injuries-but-increase-in-deaths-due-to-mesothelioma\/"},"modified":"2014-07-29T16:51:47","modified_gmt":"2014-07-29T14:51:47","slug":"united-kingdom-decrease-in-fatal-occupational-injuries-but-increase-in-deaths-due-to-mesothelioma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/en\/united-kingdom-decrease-in-fatal-occupational-injuries-but-increase-in-deaths-due-to-mesothelioma\/","title":{"rendered":"UNITED KINGDOM: Decrease in fatal occupational injuries but increase in deaths due to mesothelioma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/press.hse.gov.uk\/2014\/new-figures-show-all-time-low-in-fatal-injuries-to-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">provisional figures<\/a> published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the number of deaths in the workplace has never been so low. 133 fatal injuries were recorded between April 2013 and March 2014, versus 150 in 2012\/2013, and the overall rate of fatal injuries fell to 0.44 per 100,000 workers, versus 0.51.<\/p>\n<p>By sector of activity, the statistics reveal:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27 fatal OIs in agriculture, versus an average of 33 for the past five years;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">42 fatal OIs in construction, versus an average of 46;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\">4 fatal OIs in the wastes and recycling sector.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In contrast, the number of deaths due to mesothelioma, a cancer caused by asbestos exposure, increased from 2291 in 2001 to 2335 in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>According to the HSE, &#8220;the United Kingdom again has the lowest rate of fatal occupational injuries of the leading industrialized countries in Europe &#8211; Germany, France, Spain and Italy &#8211; for the eighth year running&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to provisional figures published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the number of deaths in the workplace has never been so low. 133 fatal injuries were recorded between April 2013 and March 2014, versus 150 in 2012\/2013, and the overall rate of fatal injuries fell to 0.44 per 100,000 workers, versus 0.51.
