In some cases, the penalties could be ten times greater than they are at present.<\/p>\n<p> The updated rules focus on three key factors for determining penalties: the degree of damage caused, the guilt of the instigator and the revenues of the enterprise charged. They also apply to offences committed prior to 1 February.<\/p>\n<p> The Trades Union Congress (TUC), &#8220;The voice of Britain at work&#8221;, welcomed these new guidelines, considering that the current rules were by no means dissuasive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sentencingcouncil.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/HS-offences-definitive-guideline-FINAL-web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sentencing Council &#8211; Definitive Guideline<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.3em;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/strongerunions.org\/2016\/02\/10\/new-sentencing-guidelines-welcomed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Opinion of the Trades Union Congress<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New guidelines regarding the conviction of those who break health and safety laws came into effect on 1 February 2016.
