The membership of the Institute for Standardization of Serbia (ISS) in the CEN and CENELEC took effect on 1 January 2017. It directly supports Serbia’s negotiations with the EU.<\/p>\n
On 23 November 2016, the General Assemblies of the two European standards organizations officially accepted the ISS’s application to become a full member. This follows on from more than 15 years of close cooperation between the ISS and CEN-CENELEC. ISS has been an affiliated member of the CEN since January 2005 and of CENELEC since 2009, and this has contributed to better technical alignment between Serbia and the European Union (EU) and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).<\/p>\n
The Republic of Serbia applied for membership of the EU in 2009 and obtained the status of “accession country” in March 2012. The first intergovernmental conference of 21 January 2014 marked the formal start of Serbia’s membership negotiations. The fact of becoming a member of the CEN and CENELEC directly supports Serbia’s negotiations with the EU.<\/p>\n
