{"id":34820,"date":"2025-09-19T11:33:23","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T09:33:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/?p=34820"},"modified":"2025-09-22T09:51:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T07:51:16","slug":"germany-the-influence-of-temperature-on-workplace-accidents-survey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/en\/germany-the-influence-of-temperature-on-workplace-accidents-survey\/","title":{"rendered":"GERMANY: The influence of temperature on workplace accidents (survey)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent survey conducted by the <strong>DGUV<\/strong> (<em>Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung<\/em> &#8211; German statutory accident insurance) highlights the <strong>link between extreme temperatures and the frequency of workplace accidents. <\/strong>By cross-referencing data on workplace accidents recorded between 2017 and 2023 with local weather information from the DWD (<em>Deutscher Wetterdienst<\/em> &#8211; German Meteorological Service), researchers found that <strong>the number of accidents increases significantly during periods of intense cold (\u2264 0\u00b0C) or extreme heat (\u2265 30\u00b0C).<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><strong>Intense cold: a significant increase in commuting accidents<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-34844 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094238-300x193.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"642\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094238-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094238.png 757w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/>The study reveals that when temperatures are below or equal to 0 degree, the total number of workplace accidents increases by around 16%, mainly due to commuting accidents. During these weather events, <strong>the number of commuting accidents increases by approximately:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>20% for road traffic accidents;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>92% for non-road accidents (slips, falls, trips, etc.).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It should be noted that in Germany, the number of days of frost (where the temperature does not exceed 0\u00b0C) is decreasing significantly with climate change. This reduction could therefore lead to a decrease in the number of accidents related to this phenomenon.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1><strong>Extreme heat: a growing risk to workplace safety<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-34847 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094434-300x192.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094434-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Capture-decran-2025-09-22-094434.png 760w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/>Conversely, episodes of extreme heat are becoming more frequent and intense. When temperatures are above or equal to 30 degrees, the DGUV records approximately 8% more workplace accidents. <strong>While commuting accidents are up by around 12%, high temperatures mainly affect the number of road traffic accidents (up by around 17%)<\/strong>, but have no significant effect on non-road journeys.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/forum.dguv.de\/ausgabe\/7-2025\/artikel\/der-einfluss-von-temperatur-auf-das-arbeits-und-wegeunfallgeschehen-in-deutschland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Find out more<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>These results confirm observations already established internationally.
