{"id":35308,"date":"2026-01-12T10:20:59","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T09:20:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/?p=35308"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:20:59","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T09:20:59","slug":"european-commission-update-on-the-new-recommendation-on-occupational-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/en\/european-commission-update-on-the-new-recommendation-on-occupational-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"European Commission: update on the new recommendation on occupational diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In line with the \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/topics\/public-health\/european-health-union\/cancer-plan-europe_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe\u2019s Beating Cancer Plan<\/a><\/span>\u201d and the European communication \u201c<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/employment-social-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/news\/commission-acts-better-protect-people-asbestos-and-ensure-asbestos-free-future-2022-09-28_en#navItem-relatedDocuments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Asbestos Free Europe<\/a><\/span>,\u201d the Commission has published a new recommendation (2025\/2609) on the European list of occupational diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Stating that \u201c<em>occupational cancer is the leading cause of work-related mortality in the EU, mainly due to exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos<\/em>,\u201d <strong>the Commission has issued a new recommendation that adds several asbestos-related occupational diseases<\/strong> to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the European list of occupational diseases (Annex I)<\/li>\n<li>the supplementary list of diseases suspected of being work-related, which should be reported and whose inclusion in Annex I of the European list could be considered in the future (Annex II)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Background<\/h1>\n<p>Since 1990, the European Commission has adopted several recommendations concerning the European list of occupational diseases. While <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.admi.net\/eur\/loi\/leg_euro\/fr_390H0326.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recommendation 90\/326\/EEC<\/a><\/span> of 22 May 1990 expressed the desire to establish a common list for European Union countries, it was <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2003\/09\/Recommandation-2003670CE-liste-europeenne-maladies-professionnelles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recommendation 2003\/670\/EC<\/a><\/span> of 19 September 2003 that made this wish a reality.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the pandemic, the list was first updated in 2022 to include COVID-19 (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=CELEX:32022H2337&amp;qid=1767006256841\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recommendation 2022\/2337<\/a><\/span> of November 28, 2022). In 2025, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/PDF\/?uri=OJ:L_202502609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recommendation 2025\/2609<\/a><\/span> updated the list once again, focusing on occupational diseases related to asbestos.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h1>Main changes<\/h1>\n<p>The 2025 recommendation <b>adds four new asbestos-related occupational diseases to the European list of occupational<\/b> diseases (Annex I):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>311 &#8211; Laryngeal cancer caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<li>312 &#8211; Ovarian cancer caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<li>313 &#8211; Pleural plaques with functional impairment of the lungs caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<li>314 &#8211; Non-malignant pleural effusion caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It should be noted that laryngeal cancer was previously included in the supplementary list (2.308 of Annex II in 2022).<\/p>\n<p><b>Three new cancers suspected of being linked to asbestos have been added to the supplementary list<\/b> (Annex II):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2.309 &#8211; Colon cancer caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<li>2.310 &#8211; Rectal cancer caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<li>2.311 &#8211; Stomach cancer caused by asbestos<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Member States are invited to inform the Commission, by 31 December 2026, of the measures taken or planned to address these diseases.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eurogip.fr\/en\/towards-a-new-recommendation-on-occupational-diseases-incorporating-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information on the recommendation of November 28, 2022<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/FR\/TXT\/HTML\/?uri=OJ:L_202502609#enc_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Access the recommendation of December 18, 2025<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Commission has issued a new recommendation that adds several asbestos-related occupational diseases to the European list of occupational diseases. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":36,"featured_media":25256,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[907],"class_list":["post-35308","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
