UNITED KINGDOM: A national trade union register to facilitate compensation for victims

UNITE, the leading UK trade union, invites workers who think they were exposed to asbestos during their career to register in a register that it has developed specifically to promote compensation for victims.

According to the HSE, 5,000 working or retired people die each year of an asbestos-related disease. UNITE considers that the actual number of deaths is far higher, and has been increasing constantly in recent years. The trade union has therefore decided to launch a major awareness raising campaign among its members. More than 11,000 of them have already been listed in the register of workers exposed to asbestos. The aim is to identify both the enterprises and the plants concerned by cases of death or disease of employees who were exposed to asbestos.

This identification will make it possible to help victims in their legal proceedings against their former employer.
At the same time, UNITE is conducting an information campaign on the risks still represented by asbestos, in particular for building finishing trades. A campaign kit for health and safety representatives is available on their website.
