Home > The news of EUROGIP and occupational risks in Europe > UNITED KINGDOM: Increase in the number of fatal occupational injuries in 2014/2015

Statistics published by the HSE show 142 deaths in 2014/2015, compared with 136 in 2013/2014. However, the long-term trend shows that fatal occupational injuries have been reduced by half in the past 20 years.

The most dangerous sectors are construction, agriculture and waste treatment. By themselves, they account for half of fatal occupational injuries:

  • 35 fatal injuries in construction, i.e. a rate of 1.62 deaths per 100,000 workers;
  • 33 fatal injuries in agriculture, i.e. a rate of 9.12 deaths per 100,000 workers;
  • 5 fatal occupational injuries in the waste treatment sector, i.e. 4.31 deaths per 100,000 workers.

It should be emphasized that the number of fatal injuries in the construction sector declined in 2014/2015 compared with 2013/2014, when 45 deaths were recorded.
