Last year, 40% of employers in the manufacturing sector saw an increase in the number of days’ work lost because of long-term sick leave. This is the largest increase in the past five years, according to a survey of company managers.
According to the “Sickness absence survey”, back aches and MSDs are still the main cause of long-term absences (38%) in most companies. However, for one-quarter of the companies surveyed, stress and mental disorders are the main cause of long-term sick leave. Moreover, companies say they are helpless to combat these disorders. It should be noted that only 10% of companies have specifically trained their senior executives on mental health issues. It must be said that the financial impact of the lack of concrete action is largely unrecognized by company managers, because almost three-quarters of them do not measure the cost of sick leave.
