BELGIUM: It would be very much in the interest of companies to invest more in the prevention of road accidents

The prevention of traffic accidents (commuting, driving for work) is apparently not obvious for many companies. This is what is revealed by an online survey (VSV, Vinçotte Academy) to which 49 companies replied. The sample is admittedly limited, but the results are revealing.

Of these 49 companies, 18 said that they included road safety in their annual plan for occupational injury prevention; 25 declared that they informed employees of traffic-related risks; 18 organize awareness raising initiatives and only four use a safety management system designed to prevent road accidents. These results are in sharp contrast with the measures taken to prevent accidents in the workplace, which have indeed decreased significantly in recent decades.

Knowing that traffic-related accidents are on average more serious than other types of accidents at work, and accordingly represent a major loss for companies, it would be fully in companies’ interest to implement a systematic approach to improve road safety at work. Risk analysis, coaching sessions, and an ISO standard for road safety management are among all the tools available to them.
