GERMANY: digitization and quality of work

Home > The news of EUROGIP and occupational risks in Europe > GERMANY: digitization and quality of work

The German trade union confederation DGB is concerned about the consequences of digitization for working conditions.

It surveyed about 9,700 workers as part of its 10th survey on the quality of work, and in particular on the impact of digital technology. According to Reiner Hoffmann, president of the DGB, “about 82% of the respondents say they are concerned by the subject on a daily basis”, whether it be robotization, computerization, or new information and communication technologies, “and for almost half of them the workload has increased and intensified. These results confirm our call to action: digitization needs rules so that technology may serve mankind, and not the opposite”.

According to Michael Vassiliadis, president of the IG BCE trade union, “it is in our interest that enterprises should exploit the possibilities of Industry 4.0 such as greater flexibility in production, research and development, and administration. But if this technical progress results in people being increasingly squeezed like lemons”, that is alarming.
