Every year, more than 150 farmers die by committing suicide. This being so, and faced with situations of distress, the agricultural social security system (MSA) has established a major suicide prevention plan for the period 2016-2020.
It follows on from the first plan (2011-2014) and is organized around three priority lines of work:
- Obtain a better knowledge of the actual situation regarding suicide in the agricultural world: the farmer survey covering the years 2007-2009 will be supplemented with the years 2010 and 2011. A survey regarding agricultural employees, covering the period 2007 to 2013, will also be performed.
- Consolidate the Agri’écoute scheme: the objectives of this second plan are to expand training for counsellors, invest in the technical system to make it more efficient, and obtain a better knowledge of the realities of the agricultural world. The communication campaigns will be revived regularly, to revitalize the system and ensure its visibility.
- Develop the operation of the multi-disciplinary risk prevention units, which are based on numerous partnerships: Ministries of Health and Agriculture, National Suicide Observatory, INVS, INPES, counselling organizations, etc.
