New international guidelines make it possible to identify and handle these risks. In a hyperconnected world, “smart” manufacturing has many advantages, but the flipside of this is an increase in risks of IT security threats.

Increasing the speed or power of a machine up to dangerous levels, or lowering cooking temperatures to cause contamination of foodstuffs are just a few examples of cases in which cyberattacks can not only disrupt manufacturing, but also create serious risks for humans. The new ISO/TR 22100-4 technical report for the safety of machinery should help manufacturers prepare for and attenuate such risks.

The report was produced by the Technical Committee ISO/TC 199, Safety of Machinery, for which the secretariat is provided by DIN, the ISO member for Germany.
