People at work in Europe report good health and well-being. However, according to the report published by Eurofound, work becomes more and more emotionally demanding, putting at risk the long-term health and viability of the work itself.
The nature of work is changing and the factors that determine health and well-being at work are changing. The control of different aspects of the work, such as task order and speed, is increasing. The management of angry clients or exposure to emotionally disruptive situations at work is also on the rise.
Demographic change is leading to a growing demand for services in a sector that is already characterized by high emotional demand, stress and labour intensity. Women, who are more likely to work in this sector or education, are particularly exposed to the psychosocial risks associated with these emotionally demanding jobs.
The report also highlights the importance of motivation, which has positive effects on health and well-being.
