OHS: a principle and a fundamental right celebrated on 28 April 2023

In 2023, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work (OSH), which will be commemorated on 28 April, will focus on a safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work.

As of June 2022, OSH is indeed part of these principles and rights along with collective bargaining, the elimination of forced labour, the abolition of child labour or the elimination of discrimination in employment. Thus, Convention No. 155 on Occupational Safety and Health and Convention No. 187 on the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health were declared fundamental.

As a result of this decision, the 187 Member States, even if they have not ratified the Conventions in question, are obliged, by virtue of their membership of the International Labour Organisation, to respect, to promote and to realise, in good faith and in accordance with the Constitution, the principles relating to the fundamental rights which are the subject of these Conventions.
