DENMARK: Fatal accidents at work to rise in 2022

According to the Work Environment Authority, 43 people lost their lives at work in 2022. Of these fatalities, two are still being assessed to determine whether they are work-related.

Over the last 40 years, the number of fatal accidents at work has been on the decline. The development in 2022 must be seen in the light of the general increase in employment, but this does not explain everything.

Most of the fatal accidents last year were in :

  • construction and demolition of buildings and transport of goods (50% of fatal accidents) and to a lesser extent agriculture, forestry and fishing;
  • men (only 2 victims were women) aged between 50 and 69;
  • Polish and Lithuanian (40% of victims in the construction sector were of non-Danish nationality).

Among the causes, 11 accidents were due to crushing, 8 to falls from height or from objects, 8 others due to objects and 6 to traffic.

While there were signs last year that the number of fatal accidents would be high, former Employment Minister Peter Hummelgaard has asked the Work Environment Council to propose new initiatives to reduce the number of fatal accidents.
