BELGIUM: New interactive game to raise students’ awareness of carcinogens in the workplace

Home > The news of EUROGIP and occupational risks in Europe > BELGIUM: New interactive game to raise students’ awareness of carcinogens in the workplace

The SPF Employment is launching an interactive game as part of the European “Roadmap on Carcinogens” campaign to raise students’ awareness of the dangers of carcinogenic substances in the workplace. Resources are also available for teachers.

Every year, work-related cancer affects more than 120,000 Europeans and causes almost 80,000 deaths, i.e. 53% of all work-related deaths. Employers have a legal obligation to ensure safety by identifying risks and taking appropriate preventive measures. (Future) employees need to know how to protect themselves.

The game asks players to identify risks in different workplaces (construction site, hospital and factory) and advise the employer according to the “STOP” principle, which establishes a hierarchy of preventive measures to be taken:

  • Substitution of dangerous substances,
  • the introduction of Technical measures to prevent or limit the release of carcinogenic substances, such as the use of adequate extraction at the source of the risk or ventilation,
  • Organisational measures such as limiting exposure time,
  • and the use of Personal Protective Equipment as a last resort, when exposure cannot be avoided by other means.
