GERMANY: when AI helps to better prevent risks

The BG BAU (construction sector insurance association) received the “Leadership and Digital Transformation” award for its innovative project, which uses an artificial intelligence (AI) application for the targeted prevention of accidents at work in companies most in need of advice.

The observation is simple. The BG’s 500 or so advisors, who are responsible for advising companies and checking that they are applying the rules on health and safety at work, do not have the resources to help the 580,000 member companies. So the application they developed was used to identify the 20,000 companies each year that needed advice and could be given priority.

The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), was launched in February 2023. To date, AI has increased the success rate of interventions by 64%, an increase of 29%. For Michael Kirsch, General Manager of BG BAU, this increased efficiency not only helps to reduce the number of accidents, but also lowers compensation and rehabilitation costs in the long term. BG BAU plans to continue and expand the use of this technology, adapting and perfecting the application based on feedback from supervisors in the field.
