The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) is calling on the European Union to act quickly to achieve the ‘laudable’ objective of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU OSHA) to promote ‘safe and healthy work in the digital age’ on the occasion of European Week for Safety and Health at Work.

It is calling for guidelines on the following subjects:

  • Teleworking and the right to disconnect: people who regularly work from home are six times more likely to work in their free time; the ETUC is calling for the second phase of consultation to be brought forward.
  • Stress at work, ‘which is the cause of over 40% of cases of depression in the EU and the UK and costs the European economy €620 billion a year. Despite this, less than 40% of EU workplaces have action plans to prevent psychosocial risks. This initiative will be crucial in ensuring safe workplaces, free from violence and harassment.”
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) at work, which will defend the principle of ‘humans in control’. ‘This directive is needed after the AI Regulation introduced a loophole that puts the safety and fundamental rights of workers at risk.’
