The Italian National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work (INAIL) has launched a new English-language podcast entitled “Remembering to prevent – The legacy of memory” dedicated in particular to victims of workplace accidents.
The aim is to present a series of episodes focusing on themes and events that have shaped the history of worker protection and prevention in the workplace. According to INAIL, “keeping in mind the lesson of the past is the only way to ensure a safe future.”
The first episode of this podcast is devoted to the Marcinelle tragedy, one of the greatest mining disasters of the 20th century, which occurred on 8 August 1956 in Belgium. Entitled ‘Marcinelle: the fire and the memory’, this five-minute episode looks back at the fire at the Bois du Cazier mine, where 262 miners of 10 European nationalities lost their lives, including 136 Italians.
Further episodes are expected in the coming months, notably on the effects of climate change on occupational health and safety, and on the management of mental health in the workplace.
