Artificial intelligence, blockchain and distributed registry technologies (DLTs) that have emerged in recent years have created a need for standardisation. CEN, in collaboration with CENELEC, has therefore created two focus groups to identify specific European requirements in this field and to act as an interface with the European Commission. They also have an advisory role to other technical committees whose sector of activity is impacted by these new technologies.

In September 2020, the Focus Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) finalised its roadmap on standardisation in this field in Europe. The latter formulated the requirements for blockchain and DLT in a White Paper proposing recommendations for the successful adoption in Europe of emerging technical standards on these technologies.
