The Commission is inviting the European social partners to comment by 15 September 2021 on how to improve the working conditions of people working through digital work platforms.

The first phase of the consultation (24 February-7 April 2021) attracted 14 responses. On this basis, the Commission concluded that the EU should take further action. Indeed, the platform economy has grown almost fivefold between 2016 and 2020, from around €3 billion to €14 billion. It brings innovation, jobs, competitiveness but also additional income for workers. But in many cases, precarious working conditions and insufficient access to social protection are a problem. The main issue of platform work is the professional status of the people involved.
