For the 12th time since 1959, France will hold the Presidency of the European Union. In other words, from 1 January to 30 June 2022, it will head the Council of the European Union. In this capacity, France is responsible for organising and chairing meetings with the ministers of the Member States by area of activity, drawing up compromises, issuing conclusions and ensuring the consistency and continuity of the decision-making process. It ensures good cooperation between all Member States.

France succeeds Slovenia, which held the Presidency of the Council in the second half of 2021, and precedes the Czech Republic, which will take over for the last six months of 2022. Its programme, entitled “Relaunch, Power, belonging”, has been defined around three ambitions:

  • A more sovereign Europe
  • A new European growth model
  • A human Europe
