According to preliminary figures concerning 2023 published by the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV), the number of occupational diseases and accidents at work fell in the year under review.
The number of notifications of suspected occupational diseases fell by more than 60% and the number of recognised occupational diseases by 63.5% to 72,747 cases. This reduction is “almost entirely due to Corona”, says DGUV Director General Dr Stéphane Hussy. Notifications of all other occupational diseases will therefore be at the same level as in 2019.
The number of notifiable accidents at work – 785,164 – fell slightly by 0.3%. However, the number of accidents on the way to work (184,189) increased by 6.3% compared to the previous year. However, the number of fatal accidents at work and on the way to work fell to the lowest level in the history of statutory accident insurance: 610 in 2023, compared with 671 the previous year.
The number of accidents at school exceeded the one million mark for the first time since 2020. The number of accidents on the way to school is just over 90,000. The number of fatal accidents at school and on the way to school fell from 25 in 2022 to 31 last year.
